Ronnie BelliardImmediately after the Nationals' 2-1 loss to St. Louis on Sunday, the team announced that infielder Ronnie Belliard has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league reliever Luis Garcia and a player to be named later.

Garcia, 22, has accrued a 5-3 record and 2.92 ERA with five saves for the low-single-A Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League.

Belliard, 34, was in the final season of a two-year contract with the Nats and will be a free agent after the 2009 season.  Entering Sunday's action, he had logged a batting line of .247 / .297 / .376 in 85 games with Washington this year.

UPDATE 7:00 pm Sunday 8/30: Per Chico Harlan at the Post's "Nationals Journal," GM Mike Rizzo says the PTBNL will also be a pitcher -- "somebody who could impact us in the near future," unlike low-single-A prospect Garcia -- and that triple-A Syracuse outfielder Justin Maxwell will join the Nats in San Diego to fill the roster spot vacated by Belliard.

UPDATE 8:15 pm Sunday 8/30: The Dodgers have no shortage of high-ceiling pitching prospects in their system. Here's an outline of this season's performances of the five whom Baseball America named among the Dodgers' top ten prospects of 2009 (excluding James McDonald, who is now with the big club):

Pitcher Age Role Current Team Level W L ERA Innings Pitched in 2009
Scott Elbert 23 SP-RP Albuquerque AAA 5 4 4.16 109
Josh Lindblom 22 RP Albuquerque AAA 5 5 4.00 92 1/3
Chris Withrow 20 SP Chattanooga AA 6 6 4.69 108 2/3
Nathan Eovaldi 19 SP-RP Great Lakes Low-A 2 5 3.38 93 1/3
Ethan Martin 20 SP-RP Great Lakes Low-A 6 8 3.90 97

Upon moving to the DC area in 1984, he duly began rooting for the Orioles but found it was never quite the same. Especially after the 1994 strike and the Angelos teardown.

Mike's inner fanboy came back to life the minute the Nats hit RFK in 2005. He shares his random observations with the discerning readers of Nationals Pride and eagerly awaits the day when he'll be complaining about having to pay entirely too much for playoff tickets at Nats Park.
