Davey Johnson gets his wish - a tough job

In retrospect, Davey Johnson's quote in this week's Sporting News seems oddly predictive.

Responding to a question submitted by a Mets fan from Utica, Johnson talked about whether he had ambitions to run a ballclub again. The complete reply:

Bob,

I would take on the challenge to manage a big league team if I liked the location, the league and the chance to make a difference. Money is not an issue. I live for challenges -- to make a difference for ownership and special cities. I have a great life here in Central Florida, but my motor gets running real fast for a tough job. I like opportunities, not security.

The Nationals announced Wednesday that Johnson was hired as a senior advisor to General Manager Mike Rizzo. My guess is the quote was written weeks before.

Johnson, of course, led the Mets to their 1986 World Series win... generating all sorts of goodwill with a certain writer who might have been a devoted six-year-old Mets fan at the time.

See the Johnson quote for yourself on page 8 of the Nov. 23 edition of my favorite sports publication, the Sporting News.
